THE POMEGRANATE GUILD OF JUDAIC TEXTILES, TORONTO
Submitted by Rikki Blitt, President & ONN representative
Report - August, 2010
Members of The Pomegranate Guild of Judaic Textiles, Toronto enjoyed a wonderful series of programs this year. Our guest speakers were innovative and inspiring textile artists who shared their journeys as artists as well as their techniques with us. (Guest artist names are available from Rikki.)
The year started with the opening of our exhibit "Upon the Door Posts", a collection of mezuzot cases (these small containers are hung on doorposts in Jewish homes and contain a handwritten prayer on parchment). The pieces reflect the variety of interests and skills of our members who are quilters, weavers, beaders and embroidery workers and fabric artists. The exhibit then travelled to London, Hamilton and Montreal, and will soon be back in Toronto before going to a few venues in the United States.
At this moment we are collecting submissions for a new exhibit to open in September in Toronto.
The show is called "Tzedakah Boxes - The Beauty Outside the Box in Memory of Beverley Lokash." These are boxes in which we place coins at home for charity to remind us of our obligation to help others.
We already have a list of exciting programs for next year which will include guest artists and speakers as well as another challenge and a Technique Night.
For more information about our Guild and photos of our work, please visit our website at http://pomegranateguild.ca
Photos of the mezuzot are found under "Members' Work", and our upcoming events are listed under "Calendar". Guests are always welcome.
On behalf of all our members, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful and creative year ahead.
