NORFOLK'S OWN NEEDLE ARTS GUILD
Submitted by Cori Angus, ONN Representative
Report - August, 2010
It's almost the end of July. Where has the time gone? Probably melted in the heat!
Our Guild has been sort of busy this summer with bi-weekly stitch-ins, both at member's homes and at the Waterford United Church where we meet on the first of every month.
We were asked by the Museum, where we held our 25th Anniversary in the spring, to make items that they could sell on consignment. While at our little retreat in Crieff, we managed to stitch some book weights for them. The fun part was finding something heavy enough to put in them. When I first made mine back about 5 years, for my sister and myself, I filled them with lead shot. This gave them great weight, but we didn't want to have anyone accidentally break one open and have to come in contact with lead. We have used aquarium gravel which works, but they aren't as "heavy as lead". The search will continue for a good substitute.
Outreach Venture
Another venture we have started is a two-fold benefit, to us as a guild and to a very northern community. One of our church members has a daughter who is working in Tuktoyaktuk, NWT. As you can imagine, it is very difficult and expensive for the people up there to do any sort of crafting because of the distance that supplies need to come from. Thus our guild is cleaning out some of our "stash" and sending it there. One fair sized box has been sent and received and it contained full and partially full boxes of floss. A lot of the colours were probably discontinued or renumbered.
The letter I received back told of the delight on the faces of the women and the probable use for some of the floss. Apparently, every new baby receives a "baby belt". This is a belt with which the Mother carries her child. Pictures are to follow. I have enough for another box to be sent soon. If anyone cares to participate in this, please contact me and we can proceed from there.
Our first meeting of the new year will be at 7:00 pm on September 8th, at Hambleton Hall in Simcoe. If you would like to join us, or know of anyone in our area who needs a home guild, please contact our membership person, Libby, at 519-426-8693, or myself at 519-443-8212.
Have a great rest of the summer and a productive fall.
