Cataraqui Guild of Needle Arts - Kingston

CATARAQUI GUILD OF NEEDLE ARTS, KINGSTON
Submitted by Bethany Garner, ONN Representative
Report - January, 2012

While the Holidays provided some respite from the busy schedules we all keep, it is great to know that in just a couple of weeks we will all be back together at Edith Rankin Church and the Winter 2012 Season of our Guild of needleworkers will back at full speed stitching our way into the new year. It is fascinating to watch as work is undertaken by this Guild during the quiet and beautiful winter months - our members always commit to winter stitching with abandon and focus at this time of year! We hope you will visit our website for photos of Guild activities.

In the morning sessions at our meetings, we continue our "Learn A Stitch" program under the guidance of member volunteers. The project this year is a lovely sampler of special stitches that are used often in Sampler projects. Members choose their own threads and colours, but each sampler will be the same, and ready by late spring for travel to ONN meeting for our display. Examples of stitches in the study for January through March are the Rhodes Stitch, Round Wheat Stitch, Norwich, Lace Stitch, and Blackwork.

Mary Lou Wilson continues to share a comprehensive "Embroidery 101" learning session at the first meeting each month for members new to embroidery and as a refresher for our experienced stitchers. This is a very popular session and one that everyone has been asking for, and Mary Lou is the perfect Instructor, with her many years of experience in all phases of fine embroidery technique. Her research and the wonderful shared samples of products in the marketplace provided by the distributors are very well received by our members.

The winter months will see several projects underway in the afternoon sessions following our bi-weekly meeting mornings together. Past president, Theresa Lawrence will lead a study of Stitch Shading, using a variety of resources from the Royal School of Needlework. Pat Caffery has designed a beautiful contemporary "Sea Creature" piece to be created in her afternoon class, and members has a choice of cotton or silk threads for the stitching on the actual embroidered creature to be mounted on a hand dyed background. Both are exciting projects with focused learning opportunity for members.

Many wonderful projects are sure to be finished in time for exhibitions and sharing opportunities. Our members are invited to apply for Guild Grants for attendance at EAC Seminar 2012, and we look forward to member representation at the ONN meeting in Guelph in May. Several members are working on their THREADWORKS submissions for 2013 themed exhibition "WATER".
